Venetian Causeway May Get Completely Redone

Venetian Causeway

On March 15, a bus traveling down the Venetian Causeway got stuck over a draw bridge, which caused a portion of the bridge to fall and expose a hole. This caused repairs to start right away on the bridge.

FDOT(Florida Department of Transportation) has launched a study that may completely re-do the Venetian Causeway.

The types of bridges like the Venetian only have a 50 year life span and this bridge has exceeded that time frame.

The study will take about three years before anything is final.

Debate To Ban Cars on Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive Before the Crowds

Looking Down Ocean Drive From the End of the Strip

Miami Beach Commissioners have debated the idea of closing Ocean Drive in South Beach for cars and making it a pedestrian only road. Making it a pedestrian only road would make it similar to Lincoln Road, which is not too far away.

Not surprisingly hotel and restaurant owners on Ocean Drive are against the idea because they believe that people will stay away from the area instead of having to deal with parking. It is already difficult to find parking  in the area and closing that road will only add to the congestion.

Parts of the street are closed for certain events such as the Super Bowl and Memorial Day weekend, but to close the road permanenlty would be a bad idea for Miami Beach.

Venetian Causeway to Close for Months

The Miami Herald reports that the Venetian Causeway will close for months to repair the old bridge. The bridge has become weakened over the years and will take approximately six to nine months to fix.

According the the Herald, "The Venetian bridge crisis began March 15 when a Miami-Dade Transit bus traveling eastbound on the westernmost part of the drawbridge near Miami got stuck as it drove on the weakened segment. “A portion of the bridge fell and a hole opened up,” Miami-Dade County Engineer Antonio Cotarelo said at the Tuesday night meeting."

Along with construction on the MacArthur Causeway because of the Port of Miami tunnel and the Alton Road Project, Miami Beach residents will look to have a long commute. The good news is that the Port of Miami tunnel is supposed to be completed by next month so that could help alleviate some of the traffic.
