The Backyard of Pablo Escobar's Miami Beach House
A pink, black tiled house, located at 5860 North Bay Road on Miami Beach is set to be demolished on January 19, 2016. The house was once owned by notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, who purchased the house on March 21, 1980 for $765,500.
The 7,336 square foot house was built in 1948 and has 4 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms on a lot size of 33,041 square feet. A 2,061 square foot addition was added to the house in 1992.
The house was seized by U.S. Marshals in 1987 and was purchased by Miami attorney Roger Schindler for $915,000 from the U.S. government.
In recent years, a fire damaged a portion of the house including two of the downstairs bedrooms and was left abandoned. Vandals and graffiti artists damaged much of the house before being purchased in 2014 for $9,650,000 million by Chicken Kitchen owner Christian de Berdouaré. After demolishing the house, Berdouare plans on building a new house on the waterfront lot of the affluent street.
Last week, de Berdouaré had a team searching for cash, cocaine and other valuables that might have been hidden inside the walls of the house or buried on the lot. Escobar was known to have buried millions of dollars of cash at his various properties.
Pablo Escobar was known to have visited the property, but the house was most likely used as a drop off point for unloading cocaine with its dock and proximity to the ocean.
